CERP is the outgrowth of a significant government and industry-led effort to improve and / or develop materials and processes in foundry technologies. The Foundry Educational Foundation (FEF) is an educational program at the college level. It includes a community college, four-year technology schools as well as traditional engineering colleges and gradutate schools. The FEF is financed through annual contributions with all revenue received from annual contributors going into the FEF's general fund and is used to support the regular scholarship program as well as all other FEF activities. The Foundry Industry Recycling Starts Today Project ("FIRST") is a metalcasting industry consortium focused on market development of sustainable options for beneficial re-use of foundry industry byproducts - primarily spent sands, slags and dusts. FIRST was established in 1998 by the state metalcasting associations in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin in recognition of the fact that individual foundries and states were encountering the same engineering, educational and economic barriers to market entry.
